Lifetime reader of comics and fan of Planet of the Apes. When the two combine I can barely contain myself. Image, Boom and Titan comics fight for shelf space with Doctor Who DVDs.

No. 2: Saucer State

I’m a massive fan of Paul Cornell who has written some exceptional comics (see his work on Wolverine and This Damned Band) and some outstanding television; the best two episodes of ‘new’ Doctor Who, Human Nature and Family of Blood are his own work. But I believe that his work with Ryan Kelly on Saucer Country is one of the stand out achievements in his career. Unfortunately, that series ended sooner than it should have after being cancelled by DC Vertigo, despite Volume 1 being nominated for a Hugo Award.

The comic told the story of Arcadia and her ex-husband, who believe they have been abducted by aliens; the main complication is that Arcadia has decided to run for President of America. The 14 issue series follows the campaign trail while they secretly investigate the aliens behind their abduction.

The announcement of the continuation, Saucer State, came during the IDW panel at this year’s convention and confirmed that the original creators are all back on board only at a different publisher. It’s a bold move, switching from DC to IDW but with a re-print of the original series to proceed the new series it means a whole new audience will be able to discover Cornell and Kelly’s amazing vision.
