A Diverse Community

Orphan Black Season 1

Orphan Black is a diverse program. However, I can only think of one non-white character who is of positive role model quality. For me its not an issue but if your looking for positive role models with more diversity in skin tone and cultural heritage then it is something to be aware of. There are many ethnicities represented, as well as many sexual preferences and socioeconomic levels.

For me a big positive of Orphan Black is that there are both male and female gay characters represented. Tatiana Maslany has been asked about this in many interviews and even teared up when explaining how important it is for there to be shows demonstrating this. The sexual orientations of the characters also feel natural, they are not the defining feature. As one of my favorite lines of the show goes:

"My sexuality is not the most interesting thing about me"
