No. 1:  A Clear Character Motivation

Now this does seem obvious, but you would be surprised how many times a superhero lacks any clear motivations. J'onn J'onzz (Martian Manhunter's actual name) needs to have a reason to be a hero on Earth. Whether that be a misplaced sense of obligation after Earth became his refuge or a instilled sense of moral responsibility he developed on Mars. J'onzz needs to be a hero with reasons to save the world. Too often to viewers see these stories of a hero protecting a world that he owes nothing. Instead, he just seems to act because the plot wills it or the hero has a love interest. Martian Manhunter needs to be more than that. He has to have a logical reason for being on Earth.
