Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Arguably the most surprising film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to this point, Guardians of the Galaxy was able to take a group of relatively unknown characters and bring them together to form a team that could rival the Avengers – even though, they will be teaming with the Avengers in Avengers: Infinity War which is set to release in 2018. Guardians introduced casual fans to Star Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon and Groot, among others, and they all became fan favorites.

This movie got such stellar reviews and made so much at the box office that a sequel was almost immediately ordered, which came out earlier this year, and a third movie has been announced and is rumored to release in 2020. When the third installment is released, the Guardians franchise will be the first one in the MCU to have the same director, James Gunn, for all three films; a milestone that could take up to 12 years to achieve and that the DC Extended Universe will reach by the end of this year with Zack Snyder directing Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and Justice League (2017).
