In 2011, Green Lantern was nearly universally disliked for its ridiculous computer generated effects. The overuse of CGI made the film feel cold and disconnected from human interaction. Reynolds did his best playing Hal Jordan, but even a perfect portrayal could not have salvaged this film.

Five years later, Reynolds starred in the revolutionary comic book film Deadpool. This was one of the first major comic book films to receive an “R” rating. Plenty of other films earned this rating, (Watchmen (2009), Kick-Ass (2010) but this was the first mainstream film to receive an R rating. The film's popularity ensured an instantly green-lit sequel, Deadpool 2, which has recently begun filming and is set for a 2018 release. Deadpool became a fan-favorite even to those who were not familiar with comic books, and Ryan Reynolds' connection to the character is largely to thank. Reynolds was born to play Deadpool, and he delivered one of the most accurate portrayals of a superhero in years. His genuine fondness for the character and the passion he put into his acting was masterful.
