Being a is fun, witch, right? Seems like Netflix got the memo. ComiConverse reviews their spell in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Review: Solid Drama and Spooky Frights

Netflix

As her 16th birthday nears, Sabrina must choose between the witch world of her family and the human world of her friends; based on the "Archie" comic.

While there might not be any new Stranger Things episodes to binge this years Halloween season, in the show's absence Netflix is bringing back an iconic 1990s witch to the limelight. I grew up with Sabrina the Teenage Witch (weird for a boy huh?) as it delved into teenage life, while it blended into supernatural cliches and told fantastical stories. Its success paved the way for more Archie shows to be created and was a highlight to the weekly TV. But how do you reinvent such a classic programme? Well, Netflix plans to that with The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

We are living in the era, of solid revivals for classic programming with Riverdale and Titans both delivering on their premises of edgy teenage drama. Netflix has made an effort to provide shows for the current generation of children. I have adored these approaches to media. Have they done it again? Does The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina provide the right amount of spookiness this Halloween? ComiConverse finds out.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is set to bring a new era of spooking goings while paying homage to its original Archie roots. It serves as the companion to the current Riverdale goings on The CW, instead of focusing on high school drama brings a more spooky tone to the table. Our story focuses on the titular Sabrina - a half-witch, half-human, an all-American young woman fighting to find herself in life. Unlike the Archie Comics iteration, Sabrina feels like a modern day woman instead of the cliche roles seen before on TV. The show-runners play to her strides and deliver one of the strongest female roles in Netflix history.

Netflix

Fans of gothic horror will be right at the hole as Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, plays out like a spooky campfire tale - with terrifying demons and curses scattered throughout the 10 episode season. Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa puts his own spin on Archie Comics property, with a more dark and edgy take. Similar to what Riverdale did all those years ago on the CW. Instead of banging out 90s pop, she’s worshipping the devil and proving a point. Sabrina is darker the ever with various parts of the character being changed for a 2018 audience. Some might find the changes odd but it adds to the spooky tone.

Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka), plays the titular witch who is just beginning her dark education while tackling a normal teenage life. This might sound like a generic protagonist, but there is plenty of stuff in her closet which needs cleaning out. The show does a really good job in setting up the characters motivation throughout the ten episode season, as audiences will sympathise with her ongoing demons and imperfections. Kiernan Shipka (Sabrina) sells the updated role and delivers a shockingly outstanding performance, sometimes even propelling the series worst scenes. Audiences will definitely be impressed with this up and coming talent.

Even side-characters, boyfriend Harvey Kinkle (Ross Lynch) and aunt Hilda Spellman (Lucy Davis) both deliver some good performances throughout the episode. Somehow not failing in the traditional Netflix trap, of being useless distractions from the main story. Show-runners do a good job in giving these roles relevant jobs in the story. Audiences will definitely be happy with Sabrina's companions and their complex issues, as they all feel like real people with morals.

Mary Wardell / Madam Satan (Michelle Gomez) is Sabina’s favourite teacher during the day but possessed by the devil’s handmaiden to become a villainous character within the series. Gomez delivers a solid antagonist to proceedings, truly selling the idea of being controlled by demonic beings. Allowing for a unique villain for the updated version of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. I would love more the characters in upcoming seasons because there is so much potential.

Verdict

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is an impressive beast, with complex themes and updated versions of iconic Archie characters - Netflix truly took their time in reinvented the teenage witch. Kiernan Shipka (The Legend of Korra) fills her boots well, bringing together one of the most fleshed out female character in years, and should be commended for such stellar performance in these episodes. The 10-hour season is a good watch, with plenty of twists and moments to write home about.

Netflix and showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, reinvent the titular human witch with enough drama and relevancy to excite audiences across all ages. Perfectly striking the balance between new and old. I have to commend the amount of quality television, inside Netflix’s impressive lineup. We cannot wait for more adventures of the teenage witch.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina comes to Netflix on October 26th! Set the clocks for a bit of spooky fun.
