Pyre (PS4, Windows)

Another highly anticipated indie game, Pyre is from Supergiant Games. They’re the team behind previous indie favourites Bastion and Transistor, so we’re hoping for a similar success here. Pyre takes place in a high fantasy setting, where the player character must travel through purgatory with a group of exiles who seek to cleanse their souls. The other exiles are illiterate and so the player must guide them using on-screen narrative passages.
Whilst the setting will be similar to other games in the high fantasy genre, the combat takes its inspiration from the least likely of genres: sports games. Described by IGN as a cross between DOTA, Rocket League and Transistor, the combat mode is triggered when your group comes into contact with an opposing band. In this mode the player takes control of the three exiles in their group, with the aim of destroying the opposing team's “pyre”. The pyre can only be damaged by an orb, which can be picked up and passed around players. Different exiles will also have skills that affect the combat, such as increased speed, the ability to force players to drop the ball etc. There will also be local multiplayer for you to test your exiles against a friend’s.
With an intriguing mix of inspirations and genres, as well as a beautiful artstyle, Pyre’s highly unusual gameplay could be a big hit.
