I am a proud Blerd who lives in the Pacific Northwest home. My dad had an interest in comic books and instilled a passion for them in me. After decades of being a Marvel Fanatic, I got sucked into the DC whirlpool that was The New 52 launch. Currently, I am moving more into various independent and non-mainstream titles. I am a proud supporter of local artists, comic book creators, and comic book businesses. My two goals as a writer for ComiConverse are 1) to highlight new, little-known, and/or diverse titles, artists and writers, and work that is coming out of the smaller publication houses and 2) to address issues of race, gender, and sexual orientation in comics and the industry.

No. 1: The Coach - Wonder Woman (above picture by @illumistrations: http://illumistrations.tumblr.com)

Events in the Wonder Woman comic led to the deaths of Princess Diana’s mother, Hippolyta, and her former mentor, Ares, which resulted in her becoming the Queen of the Amazons and the Goddess of War. Since those events, she has had to manage more responsibility among her people in addition to staying active in the Justice League. Attempting to reintroduce the previously cast out Amazonian sons and brothers back into life on the island of Themyscira and dealing with the goings-on of Mount Olympus taught her a lot about working successfully with strong egos, the importance of thinking through a plan from all angles, and knowing when the people making up a team need to be praised or put in their place.

Has she made some mistakes? Yes, but what good leader has not had the opportunity to learn from previous blunders?

Diana may not have the stoic patience of the late, great Hall of Fame Coach Chuck Noll, but there is no doubt she’d hold her players to his same high standard of excellence. Coach Bill Cowher is peerless when it comes to being real and motivating his team; to coach like him would require Wonder Woman to let down her guard to be that open. She showed signs of being able to do that when she spoke to the Amazons both before and after putting the kibosh on an attempted coup from within her ranks.

Wonder Woman’s no-nonsense edge, straightforward communication, and ability to roll with the punches is similar the style of Coach Mike Tomlin. Things may not always go as planned, but she would get the best out of all of her team. Also, the League could make use of her Lasso of Truth to inflate the level of honesty demonstrated by players and coaches alike, which would suspend growing disdain from fans who feel cheated by unethical and underhanded actions.
