Female comic book characters have evolved greatly from the first heroines such as Miss Fury and Betty or Veronica to more modern characters like Miss Martian and She-Hulk. Part of their evolution can be directly linked to societal advances and emerging ideas about the capabilities of modern women. That process started to become prevalent during the late 1980's and early 1990's and led to the eventual development of the multifaceted, strong, intelligent role-models and leaders that exist today. While comics still are a largely male dominated industry, and many female characters are depicted through a sexualized lens, a similar evolution is taking place today. Comics are attracting a new female readership and are engaging fans more than ever before with the introduction of fabulous female characters that both men and women can look up to.
These are characters that are strong, bad-ass and multidimensional. All should receive more love and attention from mainstream comic fans than they are.
