Review: Teen Titans: The Judas Contract

I was caught off guard on how much I enjoyed this film. It’s a dark tale of betrayal (hence the title) that is not without humor. I laughed out loud unexpectedly a few times. The intimate banter between Nightwing and Star Fire as especially funny. Deathstroke (Slade) has a few expletives that are perfectly executed as well. The moral of the story defines a hero. Beyond snazzy uniforms or daring adventures, it’s about becoming a better person and rising above pain.

The story follows a young team of Titans: Beetle, Beast Boy, Raven, Robin (Damian Wayne) and Terra lead by Star Fire. Enter Nightwing (Dick Grayson) after some time away. He and the team pick up the trail of a zealot, extremist group called the Hive who follow a psychotic leader, Brother Blood, blindly. Blood plans on capturing the team to absorb their powers with a doomsday machine. To execute this plan, he hires the mercenary Deathstroke. Deathstroke, it turns out has someone on the inside helping him with his task.

Besides trying to discover the Hive’s insidious plans, we learn about the Titans. Each character has a complicated backstory and one has an ominous, troubled past. Terra’s cold exterior has allowed her to survive. Because of this, we see what motivates her. She has been manipulated by Slade since she was a young girl. There is a creepy balance between father figure and lover between the two of them. He is clearly a master manipulator. His twisted words filter into Terra’s ears with such conviction that she can’t help but believe them. She wants nothing more than to be loved. Brainwashed into thinking Slade can be her only source of happiness, she will do anything for him. However, there are cracks in her armor—fleeting moments of weakness that could be considered compassion for her teammates.

Beast Boy is our narrator. He has some deep, poignant lines. He cares for Terra–could even fall in love with her. They share a kiss on the beach—one of those fleeting moments. Beastie tries to break through; to show her that none of them are perfect. They all have pain that drives them to be who they are. “I think pain is what makes us a hero. It’s like a pressure that either forms a diamond or crushes you into dust.” This statement truly foreshadows the end of this story.

Robin is a badass. He's a sword-wielding kid with a tough exterior. By contrast Dick puts faith in each teammate. He is the pillar of patience and understanding. Damien warns Dick that “making decisions with your heart will get people killed.” It’s Damien’s suspicions that motivate him to track Terra. This ultimately leads to his capture at the hands of Deathstroke. From there each Titan is taken down one-by-one, except Nightwing. He realizes what’s happening and escapes Slade by faking his own death. Blood now has the Titans hooked up to his sinister machine. But it’s one Titan short of being complete. Deathstroke offers up Terra to Blood, betraying her for money. As Blood starts absorbing the Titans' powers, Nightwing comes to their rescue and chaos ensues. Terra awakens and her emotional state of all encompassing hurt, brings the entire fortress down taking Slade and Blood with her.

After searching the expansive pile of rubble that was once the Hive’s headquarters, Beast Boy finds Terra. She saved the team without any regard for her own life. The story resolves satisfyingly with each character having grown in their own way. Be sure to watch after the story ends, there is a post-credits scene.
