Many film fans are just as critical of a film’s director as they are of its actors and writers. Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are no exception. ComiConverse contributor Joseph Gioeli sorts through the criticisms and opinions to rank the top five directors of the MCU.

No. 5: Peyton Reed – Ant-Man (2015), Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)

Peyton Reed may not have been some people’s first choice to direct a comic book film, but with his background of directing The Break-Up (2006) and Yes Man (2008), Reed may have been the perfect choice to direct a Paul Rudd-led action-comedy heist caper. Not only did Ant-Man have the signature MCU humor throughout, but it also had a hint of romantic comedy humor.

In 2016, Rudd made an appearance in Captain America: Civil War during the airport fight scene. With a cast of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson among other big names and the hype that came with the first appearances of Black Panther and Spider-Man in the MCU, Rudd held his own, mostly because of the strength of his introduction to the MCU at Reed’s hands the year before.

Reed will take the reins on the upcoming sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp set to release next year.
