X-Men movies have been at the centre of the comic book movie experience for the better part of two decades. As a new generation begins to take over the franchise, there is significant debate over where the storylines should go next. Our Cat Crawford is here to explain where she thinks the X-Men movies should go next.

X-Men: Apocalypse promised to get back to the original, core X-Men team, with brand new faces playing fan favourite characters Jean Grey, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Jubilee, Storm, Psylocke and Angel.

However, as soon as the first full trailer was released and we all saw the purple and blue monstrosity that was Apocalypse, fans became worried. Days of Future Past garnered such high praise from fans that we waited with bated breath to see what X-Men: Apocalypse was going to bring to the franchise.

As soon as the first review came out, most fan fears were realized, a film that was ok, but once again failed to truly get across the best aspects of the comics.

Why Do X-Men Movies Continue To Disappoint?

No matter what timeline or generation the films choose to focus on, every single one seems to have the same downfall.

The X-Men are fairly unique, as unlike a lot of comic series, they have a huge number of key and fan favourite characters to play with. However, that’s where the issues lie for filmmakers, too many characters to play with.

It’s extremely difficult to give every single character the screen time they deserve, and no matter how strong each X-Men franchise starts off, they always fall down the never ending rabbit hole of mutants.

So is it actually possible to create a genuinely good X-Men movie that satisfies fans but also works as a well rounded film?

It’s Time To Finally Give Fans The Phoenix Saga They’ve Always Hoped For

We saw a tiny glimpse in the right direction at the very end of X2, with the first look at Jean Grey’s Phoenix. As a firm X-Men fan, the idea that the third instalment of X-Men might flesh out the Phoenix further excited me. I waited for years to see what would become of Jean Grey and then, The Last Stand happened.

Now we’re back to square one and once again, X-Men: Apocalypse fell at the excess character hurdle. They tried to include too many fan favourites, but didn’t plan just how they were going to develop them and their relationships. Jubilee yet again was brushed under the rug, the relationship between Mystique and Nightcrawler was never explained and Storm, one of, if not the most well loved characters of the franchise seemed like a spare part.

But right at the end, fans were thrown another glimmer of hope. Sophie Turner as a young Jean Grey did an amazing job at portraying Jean’s struggle with her powers. We saw yet another (if you haven’t seen Apocalypse, look away now) glimmer of the Phoenix and once again, the possibility of seeing The Phoenix Saga on screen was ignited.

With this new direction being planted within the new X-Men franchise, is this the route they should take?

Should the next instalment of the franchise finally give us what The Last Stand couldn’t?

Or would it be trying to cover old ground?

Sophie Turner has already shown us in Game Of Thrones that she can more than handle Jean’s transition and struggle, and the storyline would give the writers the perfect opportunity to develop the relationships between the different members of the team.

It’s time to stop focusing on Mystique, Magneto and Professor X and finally give Jean Grey the attention she has always deserved.

What do you think of the story arc of the new X-Men movies?

Should The Phoenix Saga rise again?
