Should it surpass a $665 million global box office return, which now seems increasingly likely, "Wonder Woman" will become the highest grossing film by a single female director.

For now, it will have to contend with the title of highest grossing live action movie, after the June superhero feature reached $652m worldwide this past weekend of June 23-25.

The record was previously held by 2008's musical romcom "Mamma Mia," which itself was a feature-length debut for opera director Phyllida Lloyd.

Passing $665m would top the Jennifer Yuh Nelson animated movie "Kung Fu Panda 2"; ahead of that on $1.28bn is the Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck co-directed Disney sensation "Frozen."

DC Films president Geoff Johns has revealed that he and director Patty Jenkins have already started working on "Wonder Woman 2."
