Star Wars: The Forces Awakens has annihilated most of the industry’s previous records and raked in an estimated $517m in global ticket sales, as of Sunday night.
Disney‘s box office colossus began by collecting $238m in the United States and Canada alone, making extinct the previous record for ticket sales, which was held by Jurassic World. The dino disaster epic did manage to retain its world-wide record, however, which still stands at $524.9m.
Fans lined the halls and formed lines around the outskirts of movie theatres as national records were set in Britain, Russia, Australia and elsewhere.

In an era where many enjoy their entertainment from the comfort of their homes, the crowds drew thoughtful comparisons, from older fans, to the earliest days of the Star Wars series. But, on this occasion, the massive crowds in every corner of the globe made the weekend a truly global experience for all involved; likely ushering in an entire new generation of life-long Star Wars fans.
It seems Disney’s efforts truly have awakened the force within the classic Star Wars franchise.
