Star Wars: The Forces Awakens has annihilated most of the industry’s previous records and raked in an estimated $517m in global ticket sales, as of Sunday night.
Disney‘s box office colossus began by collecting $238m in the United States and Canada alone, making extinct the previous record for ticket sales, which was held by Jurassic World. The dino disaster epic did manage to retain its world-wide record, however, which still stands at $524.9m.
Fans lined the halls and formed lines around the outskirts of movie theatres as national records were set in Britain, Russia, Australia and elsewhere.
