Tim Russ will always be remembered for his famous role as Tuvok on Star Trek: Voyager; however, Russ has had a prolific career on both sides of the camera. Here, Tim Russ was kind enough to join us for a brief Q & A in regards to his career in Hollywood and the in the Star Trek universe.

Star Trek Voyager: 5 Questions With Tim Russ

Q:  As someone who read for the part of Geordi LaForge on Star Trek: The Next Generation, you certainly came to Star Trek: Voyager with a number of Star Trek credits already to your name. As an actor, does having a foot in the door with a franchise like that see you well-placed when roles open up in the future?

Tim Russ: It seemed to happen at that time. Doesn't guarantee the future will be the same. It took place over 7 years.

Q:  There was a huge amount of Vulcan lore available for study by the time Star Trek: Voyager went into production. Since Tuvok was obviously going to be under the microscope by an extremely knowledgeable fan base, how did you approach the character when you were awarded the role?

Tim Russ: I just mixed a little of the already known Vulcan characters together, so the basics of the character had a solid foundation to start with.

Q:  As the fourth television franchise to bear the Star Trek name, Star Trek: Voyager had a lot to live up to. Were there ever moments where you and the cast wondered whether fans were going to take to the series and its unique arcs?

Tim Russ:
I wasn't worried. It was based on the original series as to concept. And that one worked out quite well.

Q:
You've enjoyed success as a singer, a film director and a screen writer, in addition to your acting. As a creator, did one of these roles surprise you with what it offered? You've certainly had opportunities to apply your creative side with a lot of different projects.

Tim Russ:
I have had the opportunity to mix music and acting together a few times. I look forward to doing that more often in the future.

Q:
There has been a lot of talk in pop-culture recently about the opportunities available to actors of colour. As your career progressed, did you find that to be a challenge? Your take would be really interesting, especially given Star Trek's progressive values.

Tim Russ:
I have been very fortunate to have had success in my career. Now that I'm directing more, I've noticed, that there aren't as many opportunities for minority directors. It's a much harder slog.

Thanks for making time for us Tim, and good luck with all of your future projects!
