San Andreas marks the return of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to the big screen after the huge success of Fast and Furious 7. This movie stars the likes of Alexandra Daddario, Carla Gugino and Colton Hayes. It is directed by Brad Peyton. Buckle up for our ComiConverse review of San Andreas.

San Andreas Falls Apart Fast

San Andreas is, at its core, a disaster movie. Dwayne Johnson plays Ray, a search-and-rescue helicopter pilot who is very good at what he does. The movie revolves around a monstrous earthquake caused due to the infamous San Andreas Fault; an event in which his wife Emma (Carla Gugino) and daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario) are left stranded.

First of all, let's talk about the positives of this film. This movie is visually very pleasing, to say the least. It uses great visual effects to support the plot which can't be considered original or even intelligently tweaked. Its very formulaic. The visual effects are crisp, clear and majestic. I can even see San Andreas getting some awards consideration for visual effects.

The second thing that comes to mind as a positive is the use of sound effects. The sounds are absolutely terrifying and play very important part in the movie.  Every time an earthquake hits, we hear that peculiar sound that sends shivers up your spine and I loved that feeling. It just amplified the existing tension to its height, which is an integral part the films like this.

The character development brings just enough to build the tension necessary for the plot to work. The chemistry between Ray and Blake is very average, and we're not offered anything that make this story any less predictable. While Dwayne Johnson brings his usual flair to his role as Ray, I didn’t see anything exceptional from anyone else’s performances, acting wise.

Now let’s talk the negatives.

First of all, we have all seen these kinds of movies many times in the past. There is nothing new to see here concerning the plot. It is very generic and makes use of everything that we are familiar with in a “disaster movie” to tell the story. It builds up tension using highly predictable ways and the viewer becomes insensitive towards the plot line by the end of the movie. Speaking of the ending, it too is extremely predictable.

At the start of the movie, I could tell who was going to live and who wasn't. Apart from a little family drama, nothing sets San Andreas apart from other disaster based movies in recent years.

That being said, I can't say that I didn't have a good time with this movie. If we take this movie for what it is, we can enjoy it a lot. It's a movie primarily made for its visuals and disaster scenes. There are a plenty of scenes which visually awed and astonished me, but in the end San Andreas crumbles under the weight of its own predictability.

Who will love this film?

  1. Those people who loved previous disaster movies.  Period.
  2. Fans of Dwayne Johnson. Because he was good in this movie and he is The Rock. Enough said.
  3. Those people who appreciate thrillers and suspense. This movie has some intense moments.

Who should avoid this film?

  1. This movie is quite over-the-top and even impossible to enjoy at some points. If you criticize these things, there is a huge chance that you will hate it.
  2. People who are expecting to see some stimulating plot twists or movies with a more human touch.
