Harlem has a new superhero and he’s unbreakable. Its known fact by now that the MCU Netflix shows have been on a roll since they were introduced. Luke Cage is the latest inclusion into realm of gritty superhero drama providing the best comic book show in decades (since Smallville)

Netflix's Luke Cage is out Friday, and gives us a sweet slice of the King of Harlem after his debut in Jessica Jones. Being a black man, seeing this character get his on screen debut was a site to behold; with the first episode connecting heavy themes for the MCU. Especially in the current climate in the US, its totally cool to see a bullet proof African-American superhero kick ass. He is a very emotionally driven character, something in line with Jessica Jones.

Now after his introduction in Netflix's Jessica Jones, Luke Cage has left Hell's Kitchen for Harlem.

He works multiple jobs and is currently living on the down low, but through his local barbershop he is inspired to cleanse Harlem with his strength and brains. He soon gets a chance to help Harlem, when the vicious gangster Cottonmouth leader of a drug empire's drug deal goes wrong. He gets help from Mariah Dillard who wants to boost Harlem's African-American status because she believes "black history should matter"

The tone here is very much based on 90’s Hip-Hop with the soundtrack really hitting the right notes, Luke Cage is so at home with the era that it feels like something really made in Harlem. It feels topical for today’s climate which worried me at first, but the show really feels like the perfect fit with the modern world as a black man.

Luke Cage is a superhero TV show at heart, with the usual gang warfare and big explosions added but it also acts as a really good black drama piece something I commend Marvel for doing. I have waited years for Luke Cage to be given his time in media and it feels so good to see his stories given this much love by producer Cheo Hodari Coker.

Mike Colter is the main reason for this, who is shaping into a mega star. He is a physical presence but still has some heart to him which is very ideal for the character of Luke Cage - charismatic and all the women want him (so who wouldn’t want to be him)

Colter is helped out also with some powerful black actors with Simone Missick being the standout for me.  Misty Knight is a badass detective who helps Luke Cage with his journey, they also share a romantic connection which was actually done well - I love how fierce she is in the role and want to see her in a second season.

The episodes all look fantastic, with each scene feeling very much real with the Harlem streets looking dark and deadly.

Verdict

Luke Cage is the best Marvel TV Series yet, as it delves into African-American culture with a steady amount of love thrown into the mix.

Marvel has done it again and I'm looking forward to seeing more of the yellow shirt wearing Luke Cage.

Luke Cage is steaming on Netflix on Friday!

So make room in your schedule for some brilliant TV.
