Summary:

Game of Thrones: Season 6 is a slow starter, but eventually packs a punch, giving the audience exactly what it asks for.

As Game of Thrones Fans prepare to wait another long year for the final series, ComiConverse's James Morgan takes a look at this season best and worst bits.

Warning: Post Contains Spoilers.

After last years episode, Mother's Mercy, left fans screaming at their TV's for answers, as fan favourite Jon Snow (Kit Harington) was brutally murdered by his brothers of the Night's Watch, Game of Thrones finally returns. This is the first season to be "off-book", a huge challenge for show runners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

HBO - Game of Thrones

Best: Jon Snow

This season of Game of Thrones picks up right where it left off with Ser Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunningham) finding Jon Snow's body, and with a little help from the wildlings, brings his killers to justice. However, as many fans had already predicted, the Red Woman Melisandre (Carice van Houten) would bring Jon back to life. When it finally happened at the end of Episode 2, it didn't have that shock effect one might have thought. After serving justice to his killers, Jon finally quits the Night's Watch, only to then be reunited with his half-sister Sansa (Sophie Turner) and roped into a war with Ramsey Bolton to win the North. Jon's character has really has been through a lot, and when he's first resurrected, we see a defeated worn-out man with no purpose. But we know Jon's a fighter and a natural born leader. In this season, we learn why.

Best: Ramsey Bolton

Iwan Rheon's portrayal of Ramsey Bolton for me was the best thing this season. He is definitely a power hungry sociopath who enjoys torture and games that ultimately leads to someone else's death (no spoilers as to who). Almost straight away Ramsey proves how despicable he is by murdering his father in cold blood to seize control of the north, if that isn't bad enough he then feeds his stepmother and newborn baby brother to the hounds to kill off any competition. He captures Rickon Stark and Osha, kills her almost instantly while Rickon is to be used in a game. Rheon's Ramsey is excellent at being evil, he is possibly more hated than Joffrey, a villain that the comic book universe could learn something from.

HBO - Game of Thrones

Best: Battle of the Bastards

Say what you want about this season but for me the highlight of this entire season was the Battle of the Bastards. Game of Thrones season six was all about Ramsey vs Jon and was going to end with one of them dead, everyone else take a back seat. The guy who gave fans the amazing episode 'Hardhome' Miguel Sapochnik has created something that is going to be even harder to top. This episode makes Lord of the Rings look like the Powerpuff girls. Ramsey and Jon meet on the battlefield and when Ramsey executes Rickon Stark, that's when things get interesting. Jon Snow is a one man killing machine who proves in this episode that he is still a mortal man that could easily be killed again. Ramsey however hides behind numbers feeling powerful and invincible. I won't spoil too much about the episode, but I can praise the fast paced editing and beautiful wide shot visual's made to intimidate the audience. The choreography of this whole episode should win an award, it was pure action adrenaline with notable mentions to the horse master. Keep an eye out for Sansa Stark getting her hands dirty, finally dishing out some rough justice.

Arya-Stark

HBO - Game of Thrones

Best: Bran & Arya

Game of Thrones season 6 saw a few character brought back including Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright), who when we last saw him was left training with the Three Eyed Raven. This season Bran plays an integral part in being our window to the past. He's grown a lot wiser but still manages to get himself seeing things he shouldn't leading to him being tracked by white walkers. Bran was probably the most interesting character this season purely because he can revisit Jon Snow's parentage and interfere with the past (poor Hodor). Arya (Maisie Williams) was last seen blinded by the faceless god, her story has had more ups and downs than anyone. She's the underdog here, someone you don't actually pay that much attention to early on. Things for Arya go bad to better then worse as she confronts a situation where she is forced to kill someone she likes for the faceless god, she fails and in turn becomes a fugitive to the faceless men. She eventually breaks bad and gives us probably the biggest surprise in the series finale 'The Winds of Winter', but you're just gonna have to see it for yourself.

lannister

HBO - Game of Thrones

Worst: The Lannisters

The Lannisters this season spend a lot of time moping around feeling like filler for the episodes while George R. R. Martin finishes his book. Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) declared war at the High Sparrow but then leaves to go and fight with the Frays to reclaim Riverrun from the Tullys. He succeeds, bumping into Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) in what felt like a forced romance situation. This whole thing felt very pointless, not even Bron (Jerome Flynn) could save these scenes. The next is Cersei (Lena Headey), again another love to hate character, the first 9 episodes we are suppose to feel sorry for her but sadly we just don't, we are left an entire season waiting for her to deliver her revenge (episode 10 is very explosive). Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) is another fan favourite that wasn't given enough to do this series, I was happy he became Daenerys' Hand of the Queen but his scenes were awkward and silly. Give the man something to do.

game-of-thrones-season-6-daenerys-targaryen-2

HBO - Game of Thrones

Worst: Daenerys

I don't know how many times Game of Thrones is going to keep playing out the rags to riches storyline. Every season Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) starts off at the bottom and ends up with an army threatening to cross the sea. She will make a speech about being the mother off dragons, breaker of chains etc. When we meet Daenerys she is being taken to a Dothraki village to live out the rest of her days with other Dothraki widows. However she start a fire killing all the leaders in the process and amasses a Dothraki following and army in the process. I think the whole story has been overdone, the audience is just waiting for her to cross the narrow sea to claim the throne instead of just talking about it non stop.

Verdict

This series of Game of Thrones was off book which the audience can definitely identify straight away. The writing for the first episodes doesn't give the characters much to do. The main theme this season is bringing people back from the dead, as well as Jon Snow, the Hound and Uncle Benjen return however it feels like a gimmick because as soon as they came they were gone.

The supporting characters are outstanding this season, we have Ian McShane and Jonathan Pryce giving great performances, the night king was especially brilliant in each chilling scene. The visuals for the large scale battle sequences some including Dragons and Direwolves were so well constructed that Peter Jackson could have made them.

The final two episodes however were probably the best in the series, the revenge on the sparrows by Cersei has got to be the most intense piece of storytelling seen in a long while and it really pays off.  This series belongs to Ramsey and Jon Snow, they steal every scene they are in whether its rooting for them to win, die or cheering for their real parents.

Game of Thrones Season 6 at times feel like they have run out of story to tell, but comes back with an amazing second-half which proves why this is still the best show on television.
