Netflix: A Jessica Jones Preview

Marvel's latest superhero TV show Jessica Jones drops on Netflix next month. ComiConverse's Grant Billings is here to give us a preview.

With Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) just about to start up next year with the Civil War arc, we are getting more and more info about the upcoming movies every month. Everything from plot details, castings and new characters showing up. Another platform Marvel is taking by storm is streaming on Netflix. Earlier this year, it all started with Daredevil. It was a huge hit, being one of Netflix's top watched shows, and one of the most binge watched.

Now it's Jessica Jones coming to stream. A super-powered woman with a dark past and an angry attitude, Jones can hold her own. But who is she? Of course we know the Avengers but she is not someone an average MCU fan knows. Even Luke Cage and Iron Fist, the other two who will join the Defenders team, are not well-known heroes. Daredevil was only more known because of the 2003 Daredevil movie with Ben Affleck as Matt Murdock. All four of them will team up to create The Defenders, which is set to stream onto Netflix sometime in the near future after season 2 of Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist hit Netflix.

Jessica Jones aka Jewel, Hero!

She will be played by actress Krysten Ritter, from movies like She's Out of My League and Veronica Mars (2014).

Created by talented writer Brian Michael Bendis for his Alias comic, Jessica was raised in New York, went to Midtown High (the same school as Peter Parker), and was known as "the coma girl" at school after a car accident on a trip to Disney World (paid for by her father's boss, Tony Stark) exposed her to radioactive chemicals, putting her into a comatose state. Her family was killed in the accident; when she awoke, she was adopted by a Mr. Jones. Soon she found that she had powers, including flight, durability and super strength. It wasn't until she saw Spider-Man fighting around her school that she wanted to become a hero. After a small stint of villainy, after being mind-controlled by Purple Man (who will be in the show), she created her own private investigator firm, Alias Investigations. Through her investigating she met Luke Cage, and they hit it off, spending intimate nights together often.

Jessica later had a daughter, Danielle, with Luke Cage. They raised her together, though it was tough being a parent in the super hero business as she was still a baby during Civil War, and when Luke Cage started to lead the New Avengers during the Heroic Age. Jessica also has suffered from PTSD (caused by Purple Man's mind control) and alcoholism (to forget her troubles), though she quit after her daughter was born. Danielle's babysitter, while Cage and Jones were Avengers during the Heroic Age comics, was Squirrel Girl.

Who Else?

Luke Cage is being portrayed by Mike Colter, from such movies as Salt and Zero Dark Thirty and the TV show The Good Wife.

Luke Cage will play a small part in Jessica Jones. He may have some cameos here and there but other than that his main part will be in his own show next year. Though we do know after a preview of the pilot episode that Cage and Jones are in an intimate scene together, courtesy of NYCC.

Matt Murdock will most likely not be in Jessica Jones, though their paths cross on many occasions in the comics, and they are good friends. So don't think they're won't be any Daredevil easter eggs in the show.

Iron Fist has not yet been cast.

Iron Fist is last but not least to come to Netflix for the Defenders. Another not widely known character, but a very interesting one. Like Luke Cage, Danny Rand is a hero for hire but he is also like Tony Stark. He has his own company called Rand Industries, though chooses not be apart of his because of his K'un-Lun background. K'un-Lun is an ancient city only found in a nexus, Rand found the nexus as a child with his parents in Tibet. Danny Rand is fated to be the next king or ruler of K'un-Lun. At age 19 Danny was given a chance to defeat the enormous fire-breathing serpent called Shou-Lao the Undying, and after he did his chest was branded with a tattoo and was given his Iron Fist.

The Defenders

These four characters Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Daredevil and Jessica Jones will form The Defenders. The show it set to stream onto Netflix in the next few years after Luke Cage and Iron Fist have their first season. Daredevil's season 2 is set for next year.

Purple Man

I've talked about him a little bit, but who is the Purple Man? Zebediah Killgrave was a Soviet spy who stole nerve gas. He was caught on his way out and a guard shot the canister, releasing the gas all over Killgrave, dyeing his skin purple indefinitely. After being released on a joke of an alibi, he realized that he could command others to do his will. He could easily rob a bank and take over the world, which was his plan until Daredevil stopped him. Daredevil is one of the few who can actually resist Purple Man's commands with his strong will. Let's just say Killgrave likes to get what he wants, and will command anyone to do anything to get just that.
