We have a new Spider-Man!
Finally, we can rejoice Spidey fans because we have a brand new actor and Director for the 2017 Marvel and Sony reboot. We now finally know that Tom Holland will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the currently untitled reboot which is set to be released on July 28th, 2017 in IMAX and 3D, months of speculation is now over for the actor search.
MORE NEWS FROM THE WEB
Sony and Marvel have also confirmed that Jon Watts (Cop Car) will direct.
The confirmation came from Marvel.com today which stated that the actor search was done between Feige and Pascal over at both Marvel and Sony, Tom Holland was then invited to screen tests before webbing the deal (awful pun).
Commenting on the announcement in a press release issued through Marvel.com today, Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Group Chairman, said:
It’s a big day here at Sony. Kevin, Amy and their teams have done an incredible job. The Marvel process is very thorough, and that’s why their results are so outstanding. I’m confident Spider-Man will be no exception. I’ve worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent. For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special. All in all, we are off to a roaring start.
As with James Gunn, Joss Whedon, and the Russo brothers, we love finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life. We spent a lot of time with Jon and find his take and work inspiring. Sony, Marvel, Kevin and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world. With Tom, we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Spiderman is set to appear in Civil War with his scenes being filmed in July, which is coming soon, so expect some more breaking news, but for now all we know is that Tom Holland will be playing him first in 2016.
Marvel really are not playing around with this casting, which is why it has taken them so long to make this announcement. It makes sense because Spidey is loved by millions around the world, so getting him right is key.
I think we can all rejoice that our friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man has been cast in the MCU because the hype leading up to this day has been insane, with rumours popping up everywhere. There are bright days ahead here with this franchise; all we need now are some concrete details on the story which will be directed by Jon Watts, who has turned into the figurehead for the Spidey franchise at Marvel.
That Marvel and Sony have been taking there time getting this sorted might be strange to many, but think about it this way, rushing casting can go sour if done wrong; just look at some failed attempts (cough… George Clooney). We should be happy about the slow burn.
Now, we can all agree that this is crazy news because we finally have our brand new Spider-Man!
Fans across the world, who have been quite anxious about the results, can all sleep happy tonight.
Some people might be upset that Asa Butterfield didn’t get the role but we can all be happy that the decision has been made.
Tom Holland has all the luck in the world for having snagged this role in his web!
