Ghostbusters: Sony Says A Sequel Is On The Way

Ghostbusters is destined to become a fully revived film franchise, with sequels all but in the works.  That much was confirmed by Sony's President of Worldwide Distribution, Rory Bruer, who told the following to  The Wrap.

The ‘Ghostbusters’ world is alive and well. I expect Ghostbusters to become an important brand and franchise. While nothing has been officially announced yet, there’s no doubt in my mind it will happen.

Brier's comments come on the heels of a $46 million opening for Ghostbusters; a film which had stocked controversial debates amongst fans, and which must have been the source of, at least some, apprehension for the studio. The relative success of the film, starring the likes of Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon, will now almost certainly result in addition chapters for the re-launched Ghostbusters story. McCarthy, whose star has been on the rise in Hollywood, has been responsible for an increasingly successful set of box office releases. Her continued commitment to the franchise would do much to fuel the additional projects Sony seems to be planning.

Director Paul Feig and Ms. McCarthy have worked together previously, although this summer's blockbuster represents their most successful effort to date. Successful sequels could very well see this new iteration of the property eclipse the box office success of the original series, which might go some way to quieting the legions of naysayers that have been voicing opposition to Sony's reboot efforts. The original films, which started in 1984, starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver and made $242.2 million all-in.

Ghostbusters finished in second-place in its opening weekend at the box office, trailing behind the highly successful Secret Life of Pets, which topped out at just of $50 million dollars at domestic theatres.
