Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D: The Case For MockingHunter’s Return

ComiConverse Contributor, Fanny Pack, is here to make a solid case for the return of Agents Bobbi Morse, a.k.a. Mockingbird, and Lance Hunter to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Long live MockingHunter.

It seems so long ago that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fans tearfully watched Bobbi and Hunter (MockingHunter for you 'shippers) silently say their ‘goodbyes’ to their colleagues in the episode “Parting Shot.” So much has happened—Hive has been defeated, and presumably Hydra as well; and the Inhumans who were infected by Hive have been set free. The victory was not without losses for S.H.I.E.L.D… Lincoln, Andrew (Lash), Hunter, Bobbi, and it seems Daisy too.

Where do we go from here?

S.H.I.E.L.D has been diminished, at least in terms of its top agents, and also in terms of team dynamics. Daisy, who has been somewhat of a heroine for some time is lost. May will likely have another hiatus to come to terms with recent events, and I sense a flutter of desire emanating from FitzSimmons to try out a quiet “white picket fence” type of life. This is exactly the kind of situation that calls for the return of Bobbi and Hunter. Perfectly portrayed by Adrianne Palicki and Nick Blood,  the characters provide no drought of witty banter, have indisputable chemistry, and possess awesome agent ninja skills, all of which are desperately needed right now. And now that Marvel’s Most Wanted is dead in the water, looks like we have a few Agents with some time on their hands.

Marvel’s Most Wanted has had issues from the start, being picked up and dropped a few times and it appears that it has finally found a permanent place on the cutting room floor. I’m not sure if conceptually it wasn’t working for the network, or if it had something to do with the cancellation of Agent Carter. It’s reasonable to think that if a Marvel show with a following, albeit small and cult-ish, can’t avoid cancellation then taking on another Marvel endeavor might not be incredibly titillating to the decision makers. Nevertheless, the saying goes, when one door closes (and opens and closes again), another one opens… and it just might be the doors to the Zephyr.

Hunter and Bobbi’s departure was their decision it was made solely to protect the S.H.I.E.L.D.  The situation that unfolded in "Parting Shot" required Coulson to disavow the duo and declare that they would never be agents. Of course, the alternative to this was death for Bobbi and Hunter and confirmation that S.H.I.E.L.D. still existed; and the Russian government was not messing around. So, for MockingHunter, the path was clear. BUT, this IS Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and as long as folks are still alive, everything else is malleable. I presume that the writers are clever enough to come up with some sort of work-around to bring the two back into the fold, and especially since the writers love to bust out those face-changing mask doohickeys (yes, that is totally what they’re called).

Why do we need them back, you ask?

That’s a fantastic question. For starters, they have super awesome agent skills. Not to say that nobody else operates at their level, because that is not true. We’ve seen Fitz hold his own in the field and Simmons survive on an alien planet with a parasitic devil spawn, but those two are needed in the lab. Mac is a good fighter, but he lost his partner, and with her, some of his heart (maybe a tad literally). And while it looks like Coulson might join Mac in the field as a partner, Coulson certainly isn’t a ninja warrior even if he is technically a zombie cyborg at this point.

In the final moments of the Season Finale, Coulson and Mac referred to “the Director,” which I’m only assuming is Melinda May, and if so, that takes her out of the sandbox. S.H.I.E.L.D. may have won the most recent battle but it is truly injured from the fight; and while MockingHunter may not have won any test audience awards for Marvel’s Most Wanted, they captured the hearts of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fans and could be the very thing to bring some cohesion back to the team. And the feels, we always need more feels, people.

Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, I write this plea to you and all of your minions: I sincerely hope you are plotting away to bring Bobbi and Hunter back from the boring life, please give me some sign. They don't belong in civilian life; and while they deserved a vacation, they deserve a place back on our television screens. There's no doubt, Team S.H.I.E.L.D. needs them. We need them too.

Excuse me, I have something in my eye.

Carry on.
